Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is a long-term condition that causes you to feel anxious about a wide range of situations and issues, rather than one specific event. Although feelings of anxiety at certain times are completely normal, people with GAD feel anxious most days. The psychological (mental) and physical symptoms vary from person to person, but can include:

  • feeling restless or worried
  • having trouble concentrating or sleeping
  • dizziness or heart palpitations

Anxiety in your life is caused by internal and external factors. External factors include your job, personal situations, and relationships with others. Internal factors that affect your anxiety levels include how you handle stressful situations. Also, the way you eat, sleep, and the amount of leisure activity you get has a major effect on your stress levels.

There are many things you can do yourself to help reduce your anxiety, such as:

  • exercising regularly
  • stopping smoking
  • cutting down on the amount of alcohol and caffeine you drink
  • use a self-help or self-improvement technique

Overcoming anxiety has to do with overcoming your fears and building your confidence in your abilities.
